What is the GS Trophy?

GS Trophy

The GS Trophy is a predominantly off-road motorcycle competition testing skill, mental fortitude, and teamwork. Sponsored and hosted by BMW Motorrad, it showcases their flagship adventure motorcycles (R1200/1250/1300GS and others) and celebrates the spirit of GS riders worldwide.

The journey begins with regional qualifiers featuring competitions that whittle down competitors and select the top riders representing their country in the international GS Trophy competition, which takes things to the next level.

These competitions are not races; instead, they emphasize slow speed, balance, and ultimate control over the large, powerful, and heavy off-road motorcycles as they tackle various obstacles and terrains. Some might find it challenging to believe anyone would ride these 500+ pound motorcycles off-road, but the GS Trophy Hunters believe these machines are perfectly suited for the task.

GS Trophy

The individual competitions test real-world conditions, challenging tasks that push the limits of rider and motorcycle, some purely for enjoyment, and others seemingly unrelated to motorcycles altogether.

Previous challenges have included:

  • Hill climbs
  • Water crossings
  • Log crossings
  • Sand pits
  • Mud pits
  • Rope bridges
  • Giant teeter-totters
  • Giant drainage pipes

The competition takes a wild turn with:

  • Barrel roping
  • Ax throwing
  • Primitive fire starting
  • A gauntlet with giant swinging coffee cups!

These seemingly outrageous trials truly test the skills and push the limits of these incredible machines, all while being incredibly fun.

The GS Trophy Hunters kicked off their training year with a day of off-road skills training with Garrahan Offroad Training with legendary offroad Brian Garrahan, practicing skid turns, wheelies, log hopping, and trail riding. Next, the team plans a weekend break from their GS motorcycles, heading to Sonoma for flat track training with American Supercamp. This is just the beginning! The team has exciting plans for training, rides, and adventures throughout 2024 and beyond in 2025.
